11+ Eco-Friendly Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Loved Ones

Tis the season of love and gifting! But I’m not telling you anything new when I say that most gifts are wasteful. Unless..? Yes, that’s right! Today I give you my list of eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gift ideas, you’ll get ideas of gifts for her, gifts for him, and gifts for couples; and they are all kind to the Earth, not too wasteful, and hopefully thoughtful as well!

But before we look at the sustainable gift ideas list, let’s talk about the idea of gift-giving itself; because that’s where everything starts right? So let’s do this.

How to Give Better Sustainable Gifts

Often, we give gifts, just because that’s what we’re supposed to do; and when that’s the spirit, it often translates into an epic fail. How many times have you received gifts you never even glanced at after having said “thank you” to the generous soul who’d given it to you? I know for me the answer is: many! And we don’t want to be that person. So how do we make sure we give better gifts that won’t just be a waste?

The first step is to remember the meaning of gift-giving. It’s not about the gift, it’s about the reason why we gift. And I’m pretty sure the reason is never to make the person feel guilty about not liking or not having any use for our gift.

The idea is to give what matters, what the person wants, what they need, what makes them happy, and what they’ll use. We need to give what matters and what will have the best possible impact – within our budget, of course. And a lot of the times, this has nothing to do with physical gifts.

Gifting experiences: the most sustainable gift-giving option

Experiences allow us to do something different – things that we don’t always let ourselves do. So what better gift than an experience for the people we love? With experiences, we get to live unique moments, build lasting memories, and enjoy the now.

I like to treat people to a spa day, or something thrilling I know they’ll love. It might be a concert, a trip, or a dinner. As long as it builds memories and it’s something to be enjoyed, that’s a yes for me.

Gifting your time: the most valuable gift

Sometimes we forget that the gift is for a loved one; someone who loves us and who (hopefully) appreciates our company. Many experiences can be enjoyed together, as a way to spend time together, and again, build memories together.

On the cheaper side of things, giving your time can mean that you’re gifting an afternoon, a picnic at the parc, or anything you’re able to do yourself. The key here is to be fully available, no distractions, and enjoy the moment together.

Give long-lasting gifts: the most durable gifting option.

If you’re still convinced you need to give a physical gift, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that; but make sure they’ll be gifts that last for a long time, that the person will use and enjoy.
